Remember remember the Fifth of November

Gunpowder, treason and plot

I see no reason why gunpowder, treason

Should ever be forgot….

Hello dear readers, you may remember on Monday I posted a little commentary on the user run hit squads. In it, I stated that they are indeed inherently flawed and that in the end they will do more harm and than good. I had no idea that the Führerette and her council of minions would completely blow it this soon.  Recently Führerette made a plurk announcing their latest plan to help “prevent content theft”. A boycott. But not just any boycott Ladies and Gentlemen! Instead they’ve decided to boycott legitimate businesses and content creators. Their plan involves shutting down everything for two whole days. MalarkyAccording to the notecard obtained by our elite cadre of highly trained ferrets, a notecard is being passed around that states the following:

On the 5th of November, the Artist’s Voice will be encouraging its members and the community to STOP. Stop buying L$, stop selling L$, stop uploading, stop creating, stop shopping, stop selling, stop blogging! Just STOP!

The effect of the content creation community in Second Life is huge. If we all banded together for 48 hours and just STOPPED – we could really send a message to Linden Lab that we will NO LONGER tolerate content theft, and show them – and ourselves – how much of an effect we have on the SL community. This will only work, however, if we ALL work together.

If you want to participate, you will be doing a great service for yourself and the community. If you don’t, please notecard me with one idea for a campaign you would be willing to participate in. Of course, this is completely voluntary, but we would really like it if you participated.

We have several solutions for creators who may find “STOP SELLING” a major task.

CREATORS:

1) Put ban lines around your land after first warning your groups of your intentions and putting it on your blog. Then set up prim signs for “Artist’s Voice” around, so that people know why. You can even set it up to give a notecard with an explanation.

2) Put prims up in front of your items with the texture provided below. Most people stop at the first road block – this will be as effective. If you rent at a mall, please clear this with your mall’s landlord first.

3) Block your shop’s doorways with prims that show the 5th of November texture. Set the prim to give a notecard explanation and a copy of the texture.

4) Please note there is a loophole in all of this – you may still sell $0L freebies! It’s not making the economy any money.

Texture to use on prims for this campaign:

SHOPPERS: STOP buying for 48 hours! You may start again on November 7th. This includes ALL L$ transactions. NO L$ TRANSACTIONS.

BLOGGERS: STOP blogging for 48 hours! On November 4th, post a message on your blog saying you are STOPPING for 48 hours and then don’t post again until Nov. 7th!

TELL YOUR FRIENDS! This movement will be NOTHING unless YOU get involved!

Please encourage your customers, your friends, your colleagues, your fellow designers, to STOP this November 5th for 48 hours!  Pass them this notecard!

This folks is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing I have seen in Second Life. Let me get this straight in order to prevent content theft, we’re going to stop buying and selling legitimate goods? Why surely that would stop the content thieves dead in their tracks. Surely the Lindens will notice that they’re not making money from one section of Second Life and immediately take action!

In a word? Bullshit.

Let me be perfectly clear, it is my opinion that this tactic will only result in the loss of business by legitimate business owners. Second Life users are by their very nature a fickle lot and if banned from a store for no good reason then the word of mouth will spread and the store will hemorrhage money. To think that a two day shutdown of commercial business amongst in what is in reality a very small percentage of users is going to attract the attention of Linden Lab is incredibly foolish. Instead establishing open dialog, attending town meetings, and office hours and actually go about educating users about the dangers and consequences of content theft. Teach new users how to file successful abuse reports when they find stolen content. People are already aware of content theft. Educating them on what to do about it in the end will be the answer. Not this nonsense of stopping all business.

Will the powers-that-pretend-to-be blackball those who do not subscribe to this ridiculous plan? I am leaning towards yes. According to chat logs received and based on past behavior  it leans towards a cute little form of McCarthyism. Isn’t that cute?

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the various logs received through the FNN (Ferret News Network)

Tenshi
Why are you guys so willing to complain and so unwilling to even participate in a 48 hour protest? That’s completely silly imho.

Tenshi
I’m not saying they don’t, I’m saying 48 hours won’t kill ANYONE.

Tenshi
Hell, it might even drum up more business after the fact

Tenshi
If news blogs pick up on this and have a list of the stores participating, people will make note of that and probably want to visit

Tenshi
you guys are RIDICULOUS. You’re not even willing to TRY! Look at you put up a fight for even 48 hours!

Tenshi
That’s pathetic!

Tenshi
Okay so you’re willing to take the money and the risks then with content theft. Fine. The next time I see any of you putting your heels in

Tenshi
the ground against content theft I’m just going to laugh at you.

This is the leader of the “Artist’s Voice” folks. Pay no attention to the crackpot behind the curtain. This is the person who wants to hurt your businesses, inhibit your legal shopping. This person for “the greater good” wants to take money out of your pockets. This same person has made the statement that 2 days of no sales wouldn’t be that big of a deal (Which should tell you how much she actually sells). And the following people agree with her.

Arabella Steadham
Kat Alderson
Ayumi Shinn
Darkley Aeon
Rebel Hope As it stands. Rebel Hope didn’t even know this was going on and apparently is not for it.
Tracy Rubble
Teagan Blackthorne
Arwyn Quandry

If your sales suffer on these two days (November 5th and 6th), don’t blame the content thieves. Blame these people who sought to “protect” you. Blame the ridiculousness of this user run hit squad.

And do not let this be forgot.

You know Ten if you were making a living at SL, you would be horrified by this. Horrified that a group of people are trying to stop sales for legitimate business owners like myself.

Content theft is a problem, ideas how to prevent it are better suited than trying to hit people with this.

Appalled, really. You have NO right to tell my customers not to go to my store.

As it stands I am being told by sources that a good chunk of the “council” didn’t agree with this move. Great management system you kids developed over there.

While I personally agree with your main points, Dancien, even as a member of Artist’s Voice (and I spoke long in the group against this decision, but not everyone is forced to listen to me or to do what I say), I strongly disagree with the necessity of naming and shaming you expressed at the end of your post.
Artist’s voice’s decisions are mostly taken by the council, that’s true, but the council works with a majority vote, with a necessary quorum to be reached for a decision to be valid. So the people you listed as the ones to be “blamed” if sales plummet on the 5th (and I seriously doubt they will be even noticeably impacted, to be honest, and that’s one of the reasons why I spoke against the whole idea. It simply won’t work at all), are just members of a council, nothing more and nothing less. You don’t know who voted for and who voted against, so you don’t know really know who to blame.

Artist Voice isn’t Tenshi, me, or any other member you listed. Artist voice is a big group of people that want to stand against content theft, each of them in their own way.
As any big group of people, someone will have to take decisions, and many will disagree. It always happens.
While I won’t support this initiative (if not by not uploading textures, like I initially planned because of Stand Up), others have decided to. As long as it’s not jammed down my throat as mandatory (and it’s not) everyone has the right to start their own project.
In the meanwhile, I’d seriously avoid pointing fingers in the direction of random people that just happen to be in a “council”. Councils, by definition, aren’t a zerg-like hive-mind, but an ensemble of different opinions.

Maybe we should not lose sight of who the common enemies are (content thieves) and fight them. I don’t think fighting this fiercely those who fight content thieves because we happen not to like *one* of their initiatives is anywhere constructive.
Of course, you’re entirely entitled to your own opinion, and as I said, I share a big portion of it. Though, the quite random naming and shaming without proper knowledge of the “behind the scenes” is counterproductive and just stirs drama in a field that should be as united as possible, at least in intent.

Cheers.

One more thing, about this: “As it stands I am being told by sources that a good chunk of the “council” didn’t agree with this move. Great management system you kids developed over there.”
I would be quite curious to hear what your idea of a truly great management system would be.
To be honest, and call me clueless if you will, in my eyes majority voting is the only way to take decisions in a group of people. Requiring an unanimous vote would effectively paralyze any action, so it’s pretty obvious that, in any other scenarios, disagreement can remain even if action will be taken.

Oh, and come on, can we avoid the “Reductio ad Hitlerum” please? It’s a tad banal for someone that articulate… Don’t make me call the Godwin’s Law on you :D

Godwin’s Law cited in less than 10 posts?? This thread is as dead as the feude between Dancien and Tenshi.

(psst..isn’t that what this is really about??)

I know by being anonymous I’m a chickenshit lily livered coward – but I’m sticking with it. Aside from the issues you two have together, I am inclined to agree with you. A large majority of people involved with Artists Voice and Content Theft Prevention/Awareness are unhappy with this whole debacle. There are better ways of poking LL up the ass, and making us all look like uncouth, mouthy yobs and screaming blue murder isn’t the way to do it.

You know, stealing ideas may not be a form of IP theft per se, but its still a douche move to pull. Why steal from Step Up?

12   Dancien
October 30th, 2009 at 11:54 am

Oh they’re not actually “Stealing” instead they’re “working with”. Which has me wondering if any of the Step Up people know about that. Step Up’s whole “let’s not upload” thing is alright. It makes a statement and doesn’t fuck over content creators.

Please read my post from yesterday Yes Hell Has Frozen Over – Lizzie is Working with Tenshi and I emphasize the fact that we are an education group. This is one protest, one idea to help get the labs attention – protests are not all we intend to do. Please quit making this some battle – people are tired of it and if there are those out there who really think this is about “winning over Step up” or “stealing” then they are simply not looking at the bigger picture. We are a group of people who hope to make a difference this is not a competition. I for one joined Artist’s Voice for the fact that it will get attention and if I can help one content creator or educated one newbie in SL about content theft than I have done my job in my eyes. I saw the value in the group and I was very willing to put my personal differences aside to help. Why does so much of SL have to be about us vs them. Take care.

And Dancien if you feel as though you can create a more effective group I would be more than happy to work with you as well and take on a similar role. My intention is to work in the newbie areas with education and awareness and I am sure Artist’s Group won’t have an issue with me working with another group as well. So pony up my friend, turn your criticism into action and help the community I know you love.

The fact that Tenshi has anything to do with this group, much less as the “chancellor” (wtf?) Is why I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. All Tenshi cares about is Tenshi. If you think she cares about content creators as much as she cares about hits on her blog and being in charge then you are sadly and possibly disastrously mistaken. This is the stupidest most ill conceived idea I have heard in months. And of course I’m posting anonymously. Do you think I’m going to take the chance of being blacklisted and harassed by a huge group of bloggers and Tenshi-ites and accused of not being sympathetic to content theft and YES even of being a copier myself? Cause that’s where this group is going. lest you all have forgotten the past few years of SCD dramas, witch hunts and retractions after the fact. Good luck with this. Dancien is right, this is bullshit and anyone involved will have the stain.
Oh and btw, just confirmed with the Step Up group in world that they ARE NOT associated nor WORKING with Artist’s Voice, so don’t say you are.

I prefer direct action that leads to asshat removal. Cryolife detectors have been working wonders. Many times the jerks are already missing from search by the time I see a report from someone somewhere and I try to ban them. Most reported cryolife users I saw have been banned since around mid August when cryolife detector distribution quietly commenced. And that is a whole lot too. Maybe over 1000. I was surprised when LL started banning them so I never really kept count. This is what you call taking direct action. This might be just one form of viewer but it is one more than nothing. Lately the scripts tend to mysteriously stop working. Exactly just after the black hat revolt inside LL over the Cyn blog that resulted in the “technical people” regaining control back from “the suits”. Maybe LL’s “technical people” are disabling them. Maybe just rolling restarts is screwing them up. Maybe the wonders of LSL is to blame. They just stop working lately. Who knows. You can reset them or if you suspect LL is trying to kill the detectors (I would not put it past the LL “technical people”) then you can paste the code (assuming you have the open source version) into a new script named whatever, my big toe, etc., put it in a prim called Object, and use that instead. Be a tough time tracking that down to disable it.

In addition inspect everyone and look for people that are listed as the creators of all the prims in that hair or shoes or outfit parts you know should show a different creator name or if they are wearing an anti inspect shield then ban on the spot and report them to all your other merchant/designer friends so they can spread the word to ban.

Don’t sit there waiting for LL to do anything because LL says it is OK to use cryolife, neillife, etc. Just not ok to use them for ripping. Yea LL. We are all stupid. Not. Well maybe we are for sticking around relying upon *HOPE* to save SL.

Happy hunting.

Also if you quit your day job after drinking from pip’s koolaid pitcher then you should consider trying to get that job back. We are not going to win this fight with the current grid owner so dead set on supporting the enemy.

The ironic thing about your post title is that there are more connections to the Guy Fawkes holiday than the date. People don’t really remember, remember as they only remember who (Guy Fawkes) and what (blow up parliament) and forget why (restoration of Catholocism.) Opponents of the moratorium also focus on who (Tenshi) and what (moratorium) and make only token acknowledgment of why (content theft.)

While I think there may be wiser strategies, I think action has to begin somewhere and have no patience for those who only denigrate those who act without offering anything proactive or positive of their own.

Also, did you miss this part?

“Instead establishing open dialog, attending town meetings, and office hours and actually go about educating users about the dangers and consequences of content theft. Oh were you just pulling your typical “OH hey! I am going to judge while using big fancy words and attempting to make myself look way way superior” routine again?

Can I weigh in now?

Content theft is a huge issue, we are all aware of that. I don’t create so I can’t imagine how this virtually raping feels. Do I think that the 5th of November protest is a good idea? No. But not because of the idea itself. I just think it was hastily put together. There are well-meaning intentions at the root of the protest, but if the desired end-result is to get the Lab’s attention, I feel like it would take near-total participation from across the grid, and I don’t feel like a week is enough time to make that happen. I think, more than anything, it is the quick-trigger planning of this that has created the divisiveness that will ultimately limit its effectiveness. As I said to you, Dan, in plurk, is doing nothing better than doing something, even if it is the wrong something? I still don’t know the answer to that. So, I’m going to put on my circus-performer hat and walk the tightrope between supporting those who do participate, as well as those who don’t.

(I’m terribly wishy-washy on Sunday mornings)

What I do hope comes of it, and I have seen the seeds being planted, is a dialogue focused on taking a proactive approach to educating the consumer, rewarding & promoting designers/creators and reaching out to the Lab and the community as a whole. So, as a blogger, and a consumer, that is where I will be concentrating my efforts.
